Memories of Ian from his cousins Susan, Mandi and Julia

Created by Mandi 8 months ago
Aunty Agnes, Ian’s mum, and her brother Robert (father of Susan, Mandi and Julia) were two of seven children. They were very close and were always the peacemakers in the Swift family.

We believe that Ian’s mum and dad met at Parnall Electrical. This enabled our parents (Robert and Joan) to buy their first washing machine – quite a treat in those days.

Sue remembers the church group called the Ionians when they used to go to the folk nights at the Peahen Hotel in St. Albans. Ian used to travel up from London to accompany Sue, because he was very keen on folk music.

Ian took up the folk guitar and Mandi remembers him playing folk songs whilst wearing a most exuberant paisley waistcoat!

When Aunty Agnes lived in the Isle of Wight, Mandi rented a room in the house in Elers Road.  She was getting used to living away from home and cooking for herself. Ian used to make curries in large saucepans and bring them down to share.

Sue, Mandi and Julia remember many Christmasses celebrated at Elers Road. Ian and his father Ray loved to play pranks on us and specialised in impish jokes – like fake food and small under the table implements which moved one’s plate just as one was about to eat. We all tried to get our own back by playing tricks on him.

We three cousins remember how happy he was when he met Shaheen and the great day of their wedding. We have so many memories of Ian, mostly full of fun and enjoyment. We shall keep his life in our hearts. Until we meet again, TTFN, as Ian always used to say.
